A university should not be planned as a stand-alone project. Our Vision for AUCA is, not just to create an institution of higher learning but to create a 21st Century Creative District/City in Africa celebrating and promoting African Art and Culture.
With the fast growing urban development in Africa, AUCA could be the heart of this creative district. Thus more revenue could be generated from the lease or sale of office spaces, commercial real estate, design/business incubators, performance venues/arena, housing, shopping malls, hotels, museums, art gallery…
Our long-term plan is to make AUCA scalable with one campus/creative district per language area in Africa. For example there will be one campus for English speaking African countries i.e. Nigeria, Ghana etc., French speaking i.e. Togo, Ivory Coast etc., Portuguese speaking Angola etc… Arabic speaking North Africa etc.
When it came to the careful consideration of where best to situate Africa’s specialist university for the creative arts, one location stood out above all others. The Lekki Peninsula in Lagos – an area undergoing major regeneration in order to transform the lives of the people and businesses located there, and therefore a natural fit with AUCA.
Now considered to be the second fastest growing city in Africa and the seventh fastest growing city in the world, Lagos is a vibrant hub of contemporary culture, history and heritage. As such it already has the infrastructure to cope with the influx of visitors from across Africa and beyond, including an extensive road, rail and ferry network and one of the largest airports in Africa – Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
